The Hudson Valley Community College women's bowling team has qualified for the 2007 United States Bowling Congress Intercollegiate Team Championship on April 18-21 at Northrock Lanes in Wichita, KS.
Hudson Valley is one of 16 colleges and universities and the only two-year school from across the country that advanced from Sectional Qualifier competition this past weekend. Joining Hudson Valley in the national championship field are Ball State University, University of Central Florida, Fresno State University, Lindenwood University, McKendree College, Morehead State University, Newman University, Ohio State University, Penn State University, Pikeville College, Purdue University, Shippensburg University, West Texas A&M University, Western Illinois University and Wichita State University.
Hudson Valley qualified for the national championship by finishing fourth in the Allentown, PA regional, which consisted of 64 Baker Games, on Saturday-Sunday, May 25-26. Morehead State won the qualifier and was followed by Penn State and Shippensburg. The top four teams from each qualifier advance to the national event.
Four freshmen and four sophomores make up this year's Hudson Valley team, which recently finished in second at the NJCAA national championship in Buffalo. However, Hudson Valley has won six tournaments this season and captured its third straight Mountain Valley Conference title.
This year's Hudson Valley roster, which boasts a 3.21 cumulative grade point average, consists of sophomores Kristina Jenkins (East Greenbush/Columbia High School), Kristen Koenig (Wynantskill/Catholic Central High School), Madison Spickler (Watervliet/Watervliet High School) and Tia-Marie Stevens (Sand Lake/Averill Park High School), and freshmen Kelly Borden (Troy/Lansingburgh High School), Jamie LaBoissiere (Cohoes/Cohoes High School), Leighann Libertucci (Albany/Colonie High School) and Jayme Nieckarz (Albany/Colonie High School).
Hudson Valley last qualified for the USBC Team Championship in 1998, finishing 13th in the country.
The 2007 championship consists of 32 Baker Games to determine seeding and then a double-elimination format to determine the champion. This year's championship will be broadcast on CSTV.
