The Hudson Valley Community College men's and women's bowling teams each captured the NJCAA Region III championship held Sunday in Utica and did it in impressive fashion.
For the first time in the history of the Region III bowling championship, one school captured the men's and women's team titles along with the singles, doubles and overall individual standings.
Hudson Valley's men's team won its fifth Region III title and the first since 1999 with a score of 10,572 - outdistancing second place Mohawk Valley Community College by 288 pins.
Four of the top six finishers on the men's side were from Hudson Valley, including freshman John Ferraro (Kingston/Kingston High School) who took top overall honors with a 235.4 average over eight games. Freshman Ray Carhart (Ravena/Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk High School) captured the singles event and was second in the overall standings with a 234.3 average. Freshman Nick Harris (Latham/Shaker High School) was fourth with a 230.5 average and freshman Matt Garrity (Cohoes/Cohoes High School) finished sixth with a 225.4 overall average.
The Lady Vikings won their first-ever Region III championship with 10,063 pins, finishing 1,025 pins over second place Erie Community College. Erie had won every Region III bowling championship since 1977 prior to this year - a 29-year span.
Freshman Tia-Marie Stevens (Averill Park/Averill Park High School) averaged 234.9 over eight games to take first place in the overall standings. Freshman Kristen Koenig (Wynantskill/Catholic Central High School) was second with a 216.5 average and freshman Madison Spickler (Watervliet/Watervliet High School) finished fourth with a 212 average. Freshman Kristina Jenkins (East Greenbush/Columbia High School) rounded out the top five with a 207.5 average.
Hudson Valley will close out its season at the NJCAA Championship in Buffalo on March 10-11. The men's team will be looking for its first national title. The women's team will be searching for the second national championship and the first since 1995.
