Cross Country Earns Top-10 Finishes at Nationals; Planavsky's All-American

The Hudson Valley Community College men's and women's cross-country teams performed very well at the 2018 NJCAA National Championship Meet on Saturday morning in Westfield, Mass. 

The men's team finished in seventh place out of 23 teams and first among the NJCAA Region 3 participants. Freshman Jared Craw (Colonie/Colonie) earned All-American status behind his fourth-place finish in the 8K race. He crossed the line with a final time of 27:31.82. 

James Blaauboer (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) was the second member of the Vikings to cross the finish line as he crossed the line in 39thplace with a final time of 29:20.96. Sophomore Holden Maynard (Rotterdam/Mohonasen) finished with a final time of 29:56.76. 

Joseph Degiorgio (Troy/Troy) and Steven Lindsay (Rotterdam/Clayton A. Bouton) rounds out the Vikings scoring in the national championship meet. Degiorgio placed in 83rdplace and finished the race with a final time of 31:01.91. Lindsay recorded a time of 31:30.26. 

The women's cross country team finished in fifth place out of 14 teams and were led by sophomore Mercedes Planavsky (Ballston Spa/Ballston Spa), Planavsky joined Craw in earning All—American status after crossing the finish line in 10thplace in the 5K race with a final time of 20:15.42 

Sarah Rosenberger (Home School/Saratoga Springs) crossed the line in 23rdplace and recorded a final time of 21:44.95. Anna Clarke (Bethlehem/Bethlehem) finished a few spots behind Rosenberger in 35thplace and finished with a time of 22:26.45. 

Leigha Gaschel (Cairo/Cairo-Durham) completed the championship meet in 41stplace and recorded an official time of 22:37.99. Ashley Martinez (Red Hook/Red Hook) rounds out the scoring for the Vikings as she placed 54thwith a time of 23:19.63. 

The cross-country programs completed one of the more successful seasons in over a decade and is excited to build upon this seasons success next year and beyond.
