Therese DeCan – Women’s Volleyball Head Coach

Therese DeCan was named the head coach of the Hudson Valley women’s volleyball program in 2022.

The volleyball program has risen to new heights as they are competing for a top-4 seed in the NJCAA Region 3 standings. The instant turnaround to the program is a direct result of Coach DeCan’s commitment to the program and her desire to field a quality team. The team finished with a winning record. 13-12. for the first time since 2008 and earned a postseason berth for the first time in 15 years.

In her first season at the helm, Coach DeCan guided the volleyball program to a 7-17 overall record and 6-10 Region 3 record, the best regular season Region 3 finish since the program went 7-10 in 2017. The volleyball program qualified for the 2022 Mountain Valley Conference postseason tournament, held at Fulton-Montgomery, following their fourth-place finish in the conference standings.

Prior to joining the Vikings, DeCan was a volunteer assistant coach at Siena College, a NCAA Division I program under four-year head coach Vilis Ozols. She also served as Siena’s Clinical Supervisor of Student Teachers, which she supervised the program’s student teachers during their practical clinical work inside a school setting. 

During her tenue at Siena, Coach DeCan worked closely with the head coach to design and implement effective offensive and defensive systems with specialized positioning. She also studied game film and provided game strategies specific to their opponents. 

DeCan, a proven head coach at the high school level, coached the varsity volleyball program at Cambridge Central School, a Class C program, from 2014-2019. Coach DeCan built the high school program into a competitive organization, competing for New York State Volleyball Sectionals as well as organized and facilitated program fundraisers, clinics and tournaments. 

Coach DeCan strives at motivating student-athletes. To excel and reach their full potential by modeling a positive attitude and enthusiasm for the sport. She is adept at working with young student-athletes, guiding them to become successful, problem solvers, critical thinkers and decision makers through sport.
