Volleyball Playoff Bound with Split at Final Pod

The Hudson Valley Community College women's volleyball program earned a tough split in the final NJCAA Region 3 pod tournament of the regular season as they defeated Onondaga 3-1 and were defeated 3-1 by Adirondack.

GAME ONE: ADIRONDACK 3, HUDSON VALLEY 1 (25-23, 14-25, 22-25, 28-30)

In the first set of the game, the Vikings and Timberwolves went back-and-forth and the set was ultimately decided on the Hudson Valley attack, 25-23. In the second match, the Vikings put themselves in a deep hole, trailing by as many as 14 points and the Timberwolves quickly tied the match up at 1-1 after winning the second set 25-14.

In the third set, Hudson Valley played better and put together a competitive set, but Adirondack utilized a late set rally to pull ahead and secure the set win, 25-22, and took a 2-1 set lead into a crucial fourth set of the match.

In the fourth set, the Vikings held on to a 24-19 set-point advantage and a combination of hitting and receiving errors allowed Adirondack back in the game and earned the set and match win 30-28.

Leading the way for the Vikings was Abby Taylor, who finished with a team-best 14 kills on 40 attack attempts. She added three service aces and tallied five solo blocks and one block assist. Regina Ware-Salazar also tallied five solo blocks and added a team-best 27 assists and 15 digs. 

Abbigail Newell had 60 attack attempts and finished with 11 kills and a career-best 44 digs and added three service aces. Adriana Diaz Rolon continues to play well defensively with a team-best 48 digs and did not commit a service receive error over the course of the four-set match.

GAME TWO: HUDSON VALLEY 3, ONONDAGA 0 (25-12, 25-15, 22-25, 25-6)

Hudson Valley recovered from the devastating four-set match against Adirondack and defeated Onondaga to secure a winning record in the Region 3 standings for the first time in over a decade. 

As a team, Hudson Valley accumulated 39 kills, 29 assists and a season-high 101 digs in the four-set match. Newell and Diaz Rolon continued to lead the defense as they combined for 58 digs with Newell accumulating 31 digs and Diaz Rolon finishing the match with 27 digs.

Taylor had another big game for the Vikings as she tallied a career-high 20 kills with four errors in 35 attack attempts. Taylor also played a big role on defensive side, playing the net tough and accumulated 4 solo blocks and six block assists in the match.

The women's volleyball team will recognize the graduating class this Tuesday, October 17th when they host SUNY Dutchess at 7 p.m. at the McDonough Sports Complex on the campus of HVCC.
