Volleyball Defeats Monroe, 1-1 at Finger Lakes Pod

The Hudson Valley Community College volleyball team had a successful day at the Finger Lakes pod tournament as they kicked off the Region 3 schedule, finishing with a 1-1 record, in Canandaigua, NY.

Game One: Hudson Valley 3, Monroe CC 0 (Final)

Hudson Valley earned a nice win to start off the Region 3 pod schedule with a straight-set victory (25-21, 25-22, 25-18) over Monroe Community College in the opening match of the Finger Lakes pod. As a team, the Vikings combined for 14 service aces, 21 kills and 22 digs over the course of the three-set match.

Adriana Diaz-Rolon led the way defensively as the libero tallied eight total digs and added a pair of service aces along with a high-percentage in service returns. Tatianah Zeigler paced the Vikings service with four aces and added four kills and two digs.

Abbigail Newell and Regina Salazar-Ware combined for 11 kills, with Newell leading the way with six kills to go with five digs and two service aces. Salazar-Ware also guided the offense with 13 assists in the opening match.

Game Two: No. 4 Finger Lakes 3, Hudson Valley 0 (Final)

In the final game of the day, the Vikings faced No. 4 Finger Lakes and the nationally-ranked program defeated the Vikings in straight-sets (25-15, 25-16, 25-13).

As a team, the Vikings combined for nine service aces, 12 digs and 13 kills with 10 assists. Salazar-Ware finished with a team-high seven assists and Elizabeth Baldes added. Three assists and finished with a perfect service percentage.

Newell and Zeigler each paced the team's service attempts with three aces each. Newell also led the team with four kills, while Sidney Phillips added two kills and one solo block over the three-set match.

Up Next:

The volleyball team is back in action on Saturday, Sept. 9 when they travel to compete in the Niagara hosted pod tournament in Sanborn, NY. The Vikings will take on Erie at 10 a.m. and will end the day against the host, Niagara, at 12 p.m.
