Volleyball Falls Short at Dutchess Duel

The Hudson Valley Community College volleyball team faced a couple of premier NJCAA programs today as they competed in the Dutchess Double Duel, held at Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie, NY.

Game One: Dutchess 3, Hudson Valley 1 (Final)

Hudson Valley began its 2023 campaign against a top-10 program and host of the Dutchess Duel, Dutchess Community College. The Vikings were defeated 3-1 (25-20, 12-25, 8-25, 14-25) by the No. 6 nationally ranked Falcons.

As a team, they combined for eight service aces, 18 kills and 12 assists with Regina Salazar-Ware collecting 11 total assists over the course of the four sets. Adriana Diaz Rolon finished the game with 11 digs and added one service ace.

Tatianah Zeigler tallied a team-best four service aces and added five kills, which was tied for the team lead with Abby Newell. Newell added one service ace and posted an 89-percent service rate in nine attempts.

Game Two: Monroe-Bronx 3, Hudson Valley 0 (Final)

In the final game of the day, the Vikings faces the No. 9 ranked Monroe-Bronx. The Vikings were defeated in straight sets (25-15, 25-20, 25-12), but the action was much closer than the final game score appears.

In the opening set, the Vikings started a little tense and quickly fell 10-1 before putting together a small 4-0 run led by Sidney Phillips service ace. During the second set, the Vikings' Tatianah Zeigler put Hudson Valley ahead early 6-5with three straight service aces. Hudson Valley managed to stay within three points of the top-10 program before Monroe-Bronx's Valery Nunez served up three straight aces of her own and the Vikings trailed 18-10. Hudson Valley finished the set by outscoring Monroe-Bronx 7-1, before the Express recorded the final points to win the set.

As a team, Hudson Valley totaled 16 kills on 15 assists and added 21 digs, and eight service aces over the course of the three-set match.

The volleyball team is back in action on Saturday, Sept. 2 when they begin their Region 3 schedule at No 7 ranked Finger Lakes and Monroe in Canandaigua, NY. The opening match against Monroe is set to begin at 1 p.m. and will finish the day at 3 p.m. against host Finger Lakes.
