Preview: Track & Field National Championships (Day 1)

Elijah Washington

The men's and women's track and field teams are looking to make a statement at this week's National Championship Meet being held at Mohawk Valley Community College. The meet begins on Thursday, May 10 and ends on Saturday, May 12.

The early track events below 1500m will hold preliminary trials and semifinal races before their finals on Saturday. All of the field events will be held as final rounds. A number of Vikings are not only looking to crack into the top-8 to score points but are also looking to finish at the top in their respective events to earn All-American status. While the top eight places score for each event (10,8,6,5,4,3,2,1), only the top two athletes can garnish the title of All-American.

The Vikings are looking to get off to a great start on Thursday in the Hammer Throw with Jasmine Minick-Seldon (Stillwater/Stillwater) being the first athlete to compete. Minick-Seldon was the Region 3 Runner-Up in the hammer and her event is slated to start at 10:00am. Immediately following her performance, Region 3 Hammer Champion Elijah Washington (Ballston Spa/Ballston Spa) will step in the hammer circle. The Region 3 Pole Vault Runner-Up Isaac Brightbill (Rensselaer/Rensselaer), who set a new personal best this past weekend will be competing at 1:00pm.

The Vikings first representatives on the track will be the 400m Region 3 Champion Relay Team of Christian Otorubio (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./David Thoams), Devin Kipp (Hudson/Hudson), Brandon Clancy (Rensselaer/Rensselaer), and Noah Vice (Rotterdam/Valatie). This race will be a trial, which means the Vikings will need to finish in the top-8 in order to advance to Saturday's final. This race will go off at 3:00pm. Holden Maynard (Rotterdam/Mohonasen) will be the last competitor on the first day, Maynard will be competing in the 3,000m Steeplechase at 5:15pm.

Results will be posted automatically at the conclusion of each at Leone Timing. http://www.leonetiming.com/2018/Outdoor/NJCAA/
