Tennis Earns Convincing First Win of Season

The Hudson Valley Community College women's tennis team earned its first win of the season as they defeated conference rival, Herkimer, 8-1 on Thursday afternoon at the Vikings tennis courts on the campus of HVCC.

The Vikings jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead after they won all three double matches in convincing fashion. Hudson Valley's top doubles team of Keely Legnard and Mia Manera defeated their opponent 8-2. Aubrie Murphy and Zara Cole continued their winning partnership at No. 2 doubles, defeating Herkimer 8-4. The final doubles match featured a 8-0 win by HVCC's Katie Ziegler and Sidney Phillips.

In the singles portion of the match, the Vikings were able to secure the win fairly quickly as the top three seeds won their respective matches 6-0 in straight sets. Katie Ziegler won her singles match 6-1, 6-0 in the fifth flight. Zara Cole had to go the distance against her opponent, earning a huge comeback win in three-sets, 4-6, 6-6 (7-4), 10-3.

The tennis team returns to the courts on Saturday, April 20th as they travel to take on the Region 3 defending champions, Mohawk Valley at 2 p.m. in Utica, NY.
