Tennis Earns First Win of Season, Defeats Herkimer 8-1

The Hudson Valley Community College women's tennis team won its first game of the 2017 season after defeating Herkimer 8-1 on Saturday afternoon in Troy, NY.

The Vikings won all of their singles matches in straight sets, led by No.1 Laura Ciotoli's (Scotia/Scotia-Glenville) 6-3, 6-2 win over Herkimer's Chiharu Kainuma. Madeline Gibbons (Averill Park/Averill Park) and Sarah Sampson (Albany/Albany) got back to their winning ways as they both improved to 4-1 on the season in singles play. Gibbons defeated Herkimer's Carol Price 6-3, 6-1 and Sampson won 6-1, 6-0 over the Generals' Katerina Netti. 

Madison Bemis (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) won her first match of the year at the Vikings' No. 4 flight match, defeating Moo Toh Taw 6-3, 6-2. Saphire Ahlers (Rotterdam Junction/Schalmont) defeated MooMu Doh 6-1, 6-2.

The Vikings won their first doubles match of the year as the No.1 doubles team of Ciotoli and Gibbons defeated Kainuma and Taw 8-2.

Hudson Valley will now travel to Herkimer on Monday to face-off against the Generals with a scheduled 4 p.m. start time.
