Women's Tennis Falls 7-2 to Mohawk Valley in Season Opener

Hudson Valley Community College women's tennis opened its 2017 season at home with a 7-2 loss to Mohawk Valley Community College on Sunday.

The Vikings two victories came from Madeline Gibbons (Averill Park/Averill Park) and Sarah Sampson (Albany/Albany) as they won their singles matches over their Mohawk Valley opponents. Gibbons won as the No. 2 singles flight for the Vikings, winning her match in straight sets 6-3, 6-1. Sampson won her match as the No. 3 singles flight in three sets after dropping her first set to Mohawk Valley (4-6, 6-3, 6-4).

Laura Ciotoli (Scotia/Scotia-Glenville) dropped her match 6-0, 6-1 as the Vikings No. 1 singles player. Saphire Ahlers (Rotterdam Junction/Schalmont) (3-6, 2-6) and Natalie Mercedes (Rensselaer/Rensselaer) (0-6, 4-6) also dropped their first matches of the season in straight sets at the No. 4 and No. 5 flights, respectively.

Mohawk Valley swept the Vikings in the doubles matches as Ciotoli and Gibbons (4-8) teamed up in the top-flight doubles team and Sampson and Ahlers (6-8) took on the No. 2 doubles team of Mohawk Valley.

The Vikings are back in action on Thursday, Sept. 14 when they travel to SUNY Delhi for a 4 p.m. start.
