The Hudson Valley Community College women's soccer program went on the road to defeat Jefferson 3-0 in the opening round of the NJCAA Region 3 Championships on Saturday afternoon in Watertown, NY.
The Vikings, who lost their regular season match 2-1 in overtime earlier in the season came out strong to prove they were the better team. They took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break after the Vikings breakout star, Melissa Cole, connected on an assisted pass from Maggie Ryan at the 25-minute mark.
In the second half, the two teams played at a stalemate until Cole found Marilyn Decker open on a cross pass at the 75-minute mark. Decker's goal gave the Vikings the much-needed insurance goal as the game inched closer to the end.
However, the Vikings made no doubt about who was going to win the match when Cole scored her second goal of the game, on an assist from Ryan at the 88-minute mark to secure the win and help the Vikings advance to the next round of the Region 3 Championships playoff bracket.
The Vikings advance to take on the region's top-ranked program, Mohawk Valley on Tuesday, Oct. 25 in Utica, NY. The Hawks defeated the Vikings in their previous match a few weeks ago 10-2 at the Outdoor Athletic Complex at HVCC.
