WSOC: Mathes Nets Golden Goal for Win

The Hudson Valley Community College women's soccer team improved to 2-0 after Grace Mathes netted the golden goal in overtime to give the Vikings the 2-1 victory over Jamestown on Sunday afternoon at the Outdoor Athletic Complex on the campus of Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, NY.

The Vikings jumped out to an early start against the short-handed Jamestown Jayhawks as Mikayla Bechtel settled a throw in off the sideline at the nine-minute mark and sent the ball to the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.

Hudson Valley also battled a short-staffed team as they began to tire late in the second half when Jaelyn Bush tied the game up with a goal of her own and eventually the game went into the extra period.

Not long into the overtime period, the Vikings offense increased their intensity as they attacked the Jayhawks defense. Hudson Valley's Mathes collected a pass on the far-left side of the goal and pushed forward as she had about 10-yards between the next defender. Mathes sent a chip shot over the defense and the ball landed just out of reach of the keeper for the game-winning goal.

The women's program closed out its opening weekend with a 2-0 record. On Saturday afternoon, the Vikings defeated Fulton-Montgomery 3-1 in Johnstown, NY. They are scheduled to return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 15 when they host Mohawk Valley around 5:30 p.m., following the conclusion of the men's game at 3 p.m.
