Hudson Valley Community College women's soccer (9-2-1) won a key NJCAA Region 3 match over Onondaga 2-0 at home on Saturday afternoon.

The Vikings won the possession battle throughout the game and were rewarded as a result of a few key hustle plays. In the first half, Hudson Valley earned a penalty kick from an Onondaga foul in the box. Sydnee Metzold (Rotterdam/Schalmont) converted the penalty kick for the Vikings first goal of the game. The score remained 1-0 as the game entered halftime.

In the second half, Onondaga started to gain some of the momentum back in their favor as they managed to get off several quality shots on the Vikings defense, but keeper Bailey Dunn (Saugerties/Saugerties) finished the game with a clean slate with 13 saves.

Metzold provided the crowd some relief as she scored her second goal of the game on a late game corner kick. Metzold sent the corner through the air and the Lazers' keeper got a hand on it, but not enough to make a clean save. The ball deflected into the net for the insurance goal, giving the Vikings a 2-0 lead.

The win helps position the Vikings for a postseason run into Regionals as they are currently ranked fourth in the regional standings.

Women's soccer returns to the pitch on Saturday, October 20 for their final home game of the year. The Vikings are scheduled to play Cayuga at 1 p.m.
