The No.5 Hudson Valley Community College women's soccer team's (12-5) was defeated by No.1 Herkimer College 4-1 in the NJCAA Region III Championship game this morning at Genesee Community College.
Herkimer jumped out to a 2-0 lead on the Vikings before Sydney Buhrke (Coxsackie/Coxsackie-Athens) found the back of the net for the Vikings only goal of the game. Hailey Couchman scored the first goal for Herkimer as she won possession in front of the Vikings net and scored in the lower left corner.
Herkimer's second goal was scored on a breakaway by Mikayla Blumenstock as she beat the Vikings last defender and sent the shot to the upper left corner with 7:35 remaining in the half.
Hudson Valley was able to pull within a goal with 3:02 left in the first half as Sydnee Metzold sent a free kick on goal and Herkimer's keeper was unable to control the shot and the ball drifted away from the keeper and Sydney Buhrke kicked the rebound in the back of the net and the Vikings entered halftime down 2-1.
Herkimer went on the attack in the second half and took a 3-1 lead with 35:05 remaining in the game as Blumenstock put a short chip shot just out of the reach of the Vikings defender and keeper, Kaitlin Nadeau (Latham/Shaker) for her second goal of the game.
Blumenstock recorded the hat trick after successfully converting a penalty kick with 22:27 remaining in the second half to put the Generals up 4-1 and secured the win for Herkimer.
Following the game, the All-Tournament team was announced with Hudson Valley's goalkeeper, Kaitlin Nadeau and Sydney Buhrke both being named to the NJCAA Region III All-Tournament team.
The women's soccer season comes to a close as they conclude the year with a 12-5 overall record, the best record by the program since 2014 when they finished 11-4-1.
