The Hudson Valley Community College women's soccer team (7-4) exploded for five goals in the second half as the Vikings defeated North Country 8-1 on Sunday afternoon at Hudson Valley's Outdoor Athletic Complex.

Sophomore Sydney Buhrke (Coxsackie/Coxsackie-Athens) scored three goals, all in the second half and the Vikings leading scorer, Sydnee Metzold (Rotterdam/Schalmont) added two goals and two assists in the Vikings win.

Metzold opened the scoring for the Vikings and benefitted from a North Country mistake as the Saints goalkeeper made the initial save on Metzold's shot, but the momentum of the shot forced the keeper to bring the ball behind her head and in the process of securing the save, the ball crossed the goal line to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead.

Metzold also scored the Vikings third goal after she corralled a deflected shot off a North Country defender and sent the rebound to the right side of the net for the goal. Hudson Valley went into halftime with a 3-1 lead.

Hudson Valley continued to pressure North Country's defense and managed to score their next three goals in the first 15-minutes of the second half. Susannah Frisch (Cambridge/Cambridge) scored from the outside as her shot found the top left corner of the net.

With the Vikings up 4-1, Buhrke exploded for three consecutive goals and put the game out of reach for any potential comeback opportunity. On her first goal, Metzold found Buhrke on the outside and she attacked the defense, setting up a goal to the lower left corner of the net.

Buhrke scored again on a well-placed chip shot from the outside that was just out of the reach of North Country's keeper. Buhrke's final goal was a mirror image of her second goal. She scored on another chip shot that landed just over the head of the keeper and dropped into the back of the net for the hat-trick. Kerri VanAusdle (Athens/Coxsackie-Athens) and Frisch assisted Buhrke's second and third goal, respectively. VanAusdle also scored the Vikings second goal of the game on a deflected pass and she placed it in the left side of the goal.

The Vikings have outscored their opponents 17-2 during their current three-game win streak and will attempt to extend the streak on Wednesday, Oct. 11 when they welcome Broome to Hudson Valley at 6 p.m.
