The Hudson Valley Community College women's soccer team (1-1) won its first game of the 2017 season as they defeated Holyoke 3-2 on a rainy evening at Outdoor Athletic Complex in Troy, NY.

The Vikings took the early lead at the 28:23 mark in the first half when sophomore Sydney Buhrke (Coxsackie/Coxsackie-Athens) sent a pass through the Cougars defense to find Susannah Frisch (Cambridge/Cambridge) in front of the net for the goal for the 1-0 lead.

Holyoke responded three minutes later, off a pass from Emma Gomes (Ludlow/Ludlow) on the right side to set up Karina Volpe (Easthampton/Easthampton) for the header in the top right corner of the goal, tying the match at 1-1. The first half remained tied until Hudson Valley's Anna Colarusso (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) corralled a rebound in front of the net before sending the ball to the back of the net, giving the Vikings back the lead at 2-1.

Fighting the heavy downpour, Holyoke managed to score with 16 seconds remaining in the half to tie up the match at 2-2. As the halftime clock struck zero, the weather opened up to cause a 30-minute weather delay, pushing the start of the second half back to 7:45 p.m.

The second half was a defensive battle in which it appeared the Vikings would be heading to the overtime period for the second consecutive game when Sydnee Metzold (Rotterdam/Schalmont) attacked the net in a fast break opportunity and was awarded a penalty kick with 3:10 remaining in the game. Metzold converted on the penalty kick, securing the Vikings 3-2 win with go-ahead goal.

The Vikings are on the road on Wednesday, Sept. 13 when they travel to Adirondack for a 2 p.m. scheduled start time.
