The Hudson Valley Community College women's basketball program couldn't overcome a slow start in the first quarter as they were defeated 74-57 by No. 11 Jefferson Cannoneers on Saturday afternoon in the McDonough Sports Complex on the campus of HVCC.

In the opening quarter, the Vikings got off to a cold start, shooting 4-of-18 from the floor (22%), while Jefferson tallied 23 points on 9-of-23 shooting, including 10 points off of six HVCC turnovers. Leah Pergola and Sidney Phillips scored all 10 points for the Vikings in the quarter.

Following an evenly matched second quarter with the Cannoneers taking the 10-minute period 16-14 and the Vikings entered the halftime break trailing 39-24. At the break, Pergola was the Vikings leading scorer with 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting.

Hudson Valley won the third quarter 17-15 but only cut into their halftime deficit by two points. The back-and-forth quarter set up a critical fourth quarter as the Vikings continued their efforts to upset a nationally-ranked program in Jefferson. Hudson Valley entered the final quarter trailing 54-41.

The fourth quarter consisted of similar gameplay from the second and third quarters with a lot of back-and-forth scoring with Jefferson winning the quarter 20-16. Overall the Vikings had a tough time digging themselves out of the double-digit deficit from the opening quarter and Jefferson secured the win.

The schedule doesn't get any easier for the women's basketball program as they are back home tomorrow, Sunday, February 4th as they host No. 6 Onondaga at 1 p.m. in the McDonough Sports Complex in the campus of HVCC.
