Women's Basketball Late Game Surge Falls Short vs Herkimer

The Hudson Valley Community College women's basketball team couldn't overcome a 20-point deficit despite orchestrating a near historic comeback effort in the fourth quarter and were defeated 79-69 by Herkimer on Saturday afternoon at the McDonough Sports Complex on the campus of HVCC.

In a matchup of evenly matched programs, the Vikings took advantage of the first quarter as they held on to a 16-14 lead. In the second quarter, Herkimer regrouped and utilized an 8-2 run to jump ahead of the Vikings, leading by six points with five minutes remaining in the first half. Herkimer extended its lead in the second behind a 15-3 run in the final four minutes of the quarter and took a 42-30 lead into the halftime break.

In the second half, the Generals continued to extend its lead on the Vikings as they won the third quarter 17-5 and entered the final quarter leading 59-35. In the fourth, the Vikings came out strong behind a quick 9-2 run to bring energy back into the game behind tough full court pressure.

The Vikings couldn't overcome the third quarter deficit and were defeated despite a strong effort, winning the fourth quarter 34-20.

Leading the way for the Vikings was Abigayle Yetto and Leah Pergola who combined to score 40 points with Yetto leading the way with 23 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the floor. Pergola added 17 points on 8-of-15 and added five rebounds.

The women's basketball team is back in action tomorrow, Sunday, January 21 when they travel to play SUNY Adirondack at 2 p.m. in Queensbury, NY.
