Coyne Leads Vikings to First Round Win; Advances to Quarterfinals

The Hudson Valley women's basketball team defeated Broome 84-68 in the first round of the NJCAA Region 3 tournament on Saturday afternoon in the McDonough Sports Complex on the campus of Hudson Valley Community College and advanced to face top-seed North Country in the quarterfinal round on Tuesday, Feb. 25. 

The Vikings jumped out early, behind the clutch shooting by freshman Stacia Coyne (Castleton/Maple Hill). Coyne opened the game by hitting three, three-point field goals and finished the quarter with nine of the Vikings19 points.  Stacia continued to shoot well in the second half as she finished with a career-high 18 points, which included a career-best four, three-point field goals. 

Freshman Emily Erickson (Melrose/Tamarac) and the Vikings leading scorer in 2020, finished with 20 points, which marks the 15th game in which Erickson surpassed the 20-point plateau. Grace VanRoy (Saugerties/Saugerties) helped put the game away in the second half nine points in the second half. VanRoy finished the game with 13 points. 

The win also snapped the Vikings four game losing streak, which included three straight matchups against nationally ranked opponents in North Country (twice) and Mohawk Valley. 

The Vikings will travel to Saranac Lake on Tuesday, Feb. 25 to faceoff with the top-ranked North Country Saints for the third time this season. The Saints have defeated the Vikings in the previous two matchups this season. The game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
