Hudson Valley Community College women's basketball tipped off the 2019 season with a 81-69 road win at Cayuga on Saturday afternoon in Auburn, NY.

The Vikings were led by freshmen Emily Erickson (Melrose/Tamarac), Grace VanRoy (Saugerties/Saugerties) and Alex Rifenburg (Schaghticoke/Hoosic Valley) as all three finished the game with double-digit points. Erickson had the hot hand for the Vikings, which included three 3-point field goals, and finished with a team-high 22 points.

VanRoy added 15 points with the majority of her scoring coming from the free throw line, where she went 9-for-10 to go with her three field goals. All of Rifenburg's points came in the fourth quarter, which helped the Vikings keep a close lead over Cayuga.

With four minutes left in the game, Zakiyah Haque (Greenville/Greenville) hit a three-pointer in the corner to put the Vikings up by five points. As the game winded down, VanRoy hit four straight free throws to ice the game and secure the season opening win for Hudson Valley.

The Vikings return to action tomorrow as they participate in the SUNY Sullivan Season Tip-Off Tournament. Hudson Valley will play Montgomery College at Sullivan Community College at 1 p.m. Hudson Valley's home opener against Jefferson is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 8 at 6 p.m.
