Women's Basketball Can't Overcome Slow Start at Albany Pharmacy

Hudson Valley Community College women's basketball (9-6) could not overcome its slow first quarter and was defeated on the road by Albany Pharmacy 71-59 on Monday evening.

The Vikings scored nine points on 4-for-18 shooting in the first quarter and trailed Albany Pharmacy 21-9 at the first intermission. Hudson Valley, the nation's leader in three-point field goals made, shot 6-for-29 from behind the arc tonight. Albany Pharmacy attempted 12 more free-throws and made 15 foul shots, compared to the Vikings 5-for-7 from the line.

Offensively, the Vikings were led by Kali Szczepanski (Las Vegas/Watervliet) and Taylor Engster (Troy/Catholic Central). Szczepanski shot 8-for-16 (3-for-7 3PT) for a team-high 19 points and Engster recorded her second straight double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Hannah Kreiger (Brunswick/Tamarac) added 11 points (5-for-14) along with five rebounds and four steals in 32 minutes of action. Cameran Henderson tallied 12 points (5-for-12), five assists and three steals for the Vikings.

For Albany Pharmacy, Emma Webster hit eight field goals, including six from behind the arc for a game-high 29 points.  Dannie Griffin grabbed a monstrous 28 total rebounds, including nine offensive rebounds in 40 minutes of action.

The Vikings will now return to conference play as they host Mohawk Valley on Thursday, Jan. 18 at 5 p.m. before traveling to Fulton-Montgomery on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 1 p.m.
