The Hudson Valley Community College softball team had its season come to an end after they were defeated 3-1 and 8-4, respectively, in the NJCAA Region 3B Championship series by Corning Community College on Thursday afternoon in Corning, NY.
GAME ONE: Corning 3, Hudson Valley 1 (Final)
Hudson Valley's starting pitcher, Moira Collins pitched a gem of a game, tossing a complete game and allowed three runs on four hits while striking out seven batters. Collins had Corning's hitters off-balance for the majority of the game and held on to a 1-0 lead until the nationally-ranked Red Barons managed to score three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to secure the game one win.
The Vikings jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead as Corning's starting pitcher, Jenna Plue, worked her way into the speed of the game. She managed to walk the bases-loaded and walked in the Vikings lone run in the top of the first inning. However, Plue quickly found her rhythm and held the Vikings to just one run on two hits.
Offensively, the Vikings were led by Angelise Montanez and Nadia Hotaling, who each recording one base hit in the game. Abby Taylor was credited with the RBI on her first inning bases-loaded walk to bring in Montanez.
GAME TWO: Corning 8, Hudson Valley 4 (Final)
The second game Hudson Valley fell behind 1-0 in the first inning but battled back with runs in the second and third innings to pull ahead 2-1. Over the final three innings, Corning pulled away and outscored the Vikings 7-2 during that span and secured the Region 3B title.
The Vikings offense rebounded in the second game as they accumulated 10 hits and were led by Montanez, who finished 2-of-4 at the plate with two runs scored. Abby Taylor and Izabelle Ratcliffe also recorded two hits, which included a solo home run by Taylor in the second inning. Taylor finished 2-of-3 at the plate with one run and three RBIs. Ratcliffe went 2-of-4 at the plate with one RBI, which came in the bottom of the third inning.
Reegan Mullen earned the start and tossed 5.1 innings with five runs on seven hits. Mullen gave up six walks, while striking out four batters. Moira Collins and Anna Siter closed out the final 1.2 innings of the game.
