The Hudson Valley Community College softball team couldn't overcome five errors in the opening game of the series and later ran out of sunlight as the second game was called due to darkness before the game could reach five complete innings, resulting in a no contest, per NJCAA Region 3 rules.
GAME ONE: Herkimer 8, Hudson Valley 5 (Final)
The softball team battled with Herkimer in the first game of the day, coming back from multiple deficits before Herkimer managed to score three runs in the final two innings to pull away from the Vikings and secure the win.
Trailing 1-0, the Vikings scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning to jump out on top of the Generals. In the third inning, Nadia Hotaling starting the rally with a single through the left side of the infield. Kayden Craft singled, allowing Hotaling to score and Izabelle Ratcliffe immediately followed it up with an RBI triple to centerfield. Ratcliffe was able to score on the next at-bat when Abby Taylor connected for a double in the gap and the Vikings lead was 3-1.
In the top of the fifth, Herkimer had its big rally, scoring four runs in the frame, which resulted in the Vikings needing to respond in the bottom of the fifth, and they did behind a 2 RBI single by Ratcliffe down the right field line. Taylor followed it up with an RBI on a ground out to second base and the game was once again tied heading into the final innings.
Unfortunately, the Vikings couldn't rebound for the third time in the game and fell to the Generals 8-5. As a team, Hudson Valley collected nine hits along with five defensive errors.
GAME TWO: Herkimer vs. Hudson Valley – (No Contest)
In the final game of the day, the Vikings simply ran out of daylight as the game was called due to darkness while the team was leading Herkimer 12-7 in the top of the fifth inning. Per NJCAA Region 3 rules, the game will be ruled a no contest because it did not complete five full innings, which is required to make it an official game. All of the game stats will not count towards the season records because it was not an official game.
