The Hudson Valley Community College softball program had eight individuals recognized on the 2023 Mountain Valley All-Conference teams, as announced by the Conference coaches on Thursday afternoon.
The All-Conference selections were highlighted by Carly Gemmett, who was named the Mountain Valley Conference Player of the Year and head coach Rick Tedisco who was voted as the 2023 MVC Coach of the Year, his second straight year earning the recognition from his peers.
Abby Campbell (catcher), Katie Mannis (first base) and Gianna Bucciero (designated hitter) were awarded MVC First Team honors, while Maryssa Sano, Hannah Taylor and Jody Rogers were recognized on the All-Conference Second Team.
Gemmett was also named to the conference first team as one of the best pitchers this season. She starred as the Vikings pitching ace all season and has put together several outstanding pitching performances, which included two straight no-hitters in wins over Onondaga and Adirondack. She finished the season with a 15-6 record, tossing 15 complete games and allowed 60 runs on 119 hits and posted a 3.33 ERA with a Region 3-best 174 strikeouts in 126 innings. Gemmett had nine games where she struck out 10 or more batters, including a season-high 16 strikeouts in her complete game win over Finger Lakes on April 22. Most recently, Gemmett was named to the Region 3 All-Tournament team following the Championships series at Corning on Thursday afternoon.
Campbell concludes a historic career at HVCC as she is now the all-time leader in doubles with 39 two-bag hits over the last two seasons. Campbell accumulated 90 career hits, which places her second on the career hit list at Hudson Valley and her nine career home runs is fourth-best in program history. Abby finished the 2023 season with a .369 batting average and played in 38 games while accumulating 21 runs on 41 hits and 18 doubles.
Mannis was named to the All-Region Second Team earlier in the week as she has been one of the best hitters in the Region and Conference all season long. Mannis quietly rose among the all-time players at Hudson Valley as she ranks 10th on the all-time hits list with 73 hits from 2022-23. She is also second behind Campbell with 28 career doubles and her seven home runs this season is third-best among the single-season records at HVCC. Mannis sits third on the all-time home runs list with 10 career home runs.
Bucciero earned All-Conference honors as the team's primary designated hitter this season and finished the year hitting .333 with 21 hits, 17 runs scored and 15 RBIs in 29 games played. Bucciero hit six career home runs and ranks 11th on the all-time records list. One of her biggest hits of the season came against Monroe when she hits a two-out home run to secure a sweep over the Tribunes and helped the Vikings secure the No. 4 seed in the Region 3 playoffs.
Sano was named All-Conference Second Team as the Vikings third baseman and hit .336 on the year with 36 hits in 107 at-bats. Sano recorded nine doubles, scored 19 runs and drove in 30 RBIs. In her career, Sano has the third most doubles in program history (21) and is ninth on the all-time hits list with 74 career hits and her eight career home runs puts her fifth among the program's all-time home run hitters.
Taylor has been a two-year leader of the program and was recently named a recipient of the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence, SUNY's highest student honor. Taylor was recognized as the All-Conference Second Team shortstop following a season where she hit .291 in 29 games played. A sure-handed defender, Taylor recorded 29 outs with 23 assists and posted a .912 fielding percentage. She finished the year with 25 hits, 16 runs scored, five doubles and 10 RBis with a .408 on-base percentage.
Rogers is one of the team's best outfielders and overall defenders who has the versatility to play multiple positions in the field. She was recently named to the Region 3 All-Tournament team for her overall performance in the postseason series against Corning. She closed out her career with 16 doubles, which ranks seventh on the all-time doubles list and she hit .383 in 175 at-bats over 66 games played. Rogers recorded her biggest hit of her career in the Region 3 sub-regional round as she launched a game-winning three-run home run over the right field fence to defeat Jefferson 4-3 in the decisive game-three of the series, sending Hudson Valley to their second straight Region 3 title game.
