The Hudson Valley Community College softball team earned a tough split against Jefferson, a quality Region 3 opponent as both programs continue to jockey for a top-four seed in the upcoming Region 3 playoffs next weekend.

GAME ONE: Jefferson 4, Hudson Valley 2 (Final)

The first game was a pitching duel which was ultimately won by the Cannoneers. Carly Gemmett took the loss, but she tossed a great game as she went the distance and gave up four runs on six hits and struck out eight batters.

Offensively, the Vikings were led by Katie Mannis, who slugged a two-run home run over the left field fence, scoring Abby Campbell, to retake the lead 2-1 after Jefferson jumped out to a quick lead in the top half of the inning.

The Vikings couldn't produce with runners on base as they left nine runners stranded on bases over the seven innings. However, this was quickly fixed in the second game of the series.

GAME TWO: Hudson Valley 14, Jefferson 2 (6 innings)

The Vikings offense came to life in the second game as they combined for 14 runs on 12 hits. The Vikings produced eight runs in the top of the third inning and later added five runs in the top of the sixth inning to enforce the 8-run rule on the Cannoneers.

Katie Mannis pitched a gem of a game to earn the win. She tossed a complete game and gave up two runs (0 earned) on five hits and walked one batter. Mannis continued to hit the ball well too as she finished 1-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs and two runs scored.

The big hit came from Erin Madsen in the top of the sixth inning as she sent a deep fly over the right-centerfield fence for her second home run of the year. The home run was a much needed, three-run home run to give the Vikings a double-digit lead.

ON DECK:

The softball team does not waste any time as they are back in action tomorrow, Friday, May 5. They travel to Rochester, NY to take on Monroe CC for another critical Region 3 doubleheader as each program tries to lock in a top-four seed in the playoffs.
