The Hudson Valley Community College softball program earned a two-game sweep over Tompkins Cortland on Thursday afternoon in Dryden, NY
GAME ONE: Hudson Valley 20, Tompkins Cortland 3 (6 innings)
The Vikings got off to a slower start than usual but used an 11-run sixth inning to run away with the first game. Four Vikings recorded multiple hits in the game as the team combined for 14 hits and a season-high 20 runs and 15 RBIs.
Maryssa Sano had a big game as she went 3-of-4 at the plate, scored three runs and drove in a career-high six RBIs. Abby Campbell also finished the game with three hits and scored three runs with three RBIs.
Freshmen Abby Taylor and Erin Madsen combined to go 4-for-6 at the plate and scored four runs and drove in four RBIs.
Carly Gemmett earned the victory as she tossed 6.0 innings and allowed three runs on four hits with 12 strikeouts.
GAME TWO: Hudson Valley 15, Tompkins Cortland 0 (5 innings)
The Vikings were ready to go in the second game as they out up 10-runs in the first two innings and allowed just one hit over five innings. The big inning came in the second, as they scored eight-runs, which was highlighted by two hits by Jody Rogers and a 2-RBI double by Campbell. The Vikings collected five hits and three walks in the inning.
Katie Mannis helped the Vikings jump-start their scoring as she connected on a 2-RBI home run over the left field fence in the first inning. Campbell also homered in the game as she went yard to lead off the third inning.
Mannis also managed the game from inside the pitching circle She pitched five complete innings and allowed one hit and struck out two Panthers in the Vikings second shutout win of the season.
ON DECK:
The softball program returns to action for Senior Day on Sunday, April 30 as they host Genesee for a Region 3 doubleheader at the Vikings Softball Field at HVCC. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
Note: The softball doubleheader scheduled for Saturday, April 29 has been postponed and rescheduled to an away game at Monroe Community College in Rochester, NY on Friday, May 5 and a 3 p.m. start.
