The Hudson Valley Community College softball team completed the road sweep against Finger Lakes on Saturday afternoon in Canandaigua, NY.
GAME ONE: Hudson Valley 9, Finger Lakes 1
Five Vikings recorded at least two hits as they defeated Finger Lakes in the opening game of the series. The game remained close for a majority of the game, but the Vikings never trailed and ultimately pulled away with a five-run seventh inning, putting away and thought of a Finger Lakes rally.
Abby Campbell continued to crush the ball at the plate as she connected for two more doubles on the season. Erin Madsen finished with three hits, including a triple in the second inning to start the three-run inning. Following Madsen's triple, Jody Rogers reached on an error and Alexis Baker walked. In the process, Madsen scored on Rogers' hit and Rodgers later scored on back-to-back passed balls by Finger Lakes.
The overall speed of the Vikings put pressure of the Lakers in the seventh inning, which was kicked off by a bunt by Skylar Burns, which led to a throwing error and Burns advanced to third base. Burns scored on a fielder's choice by Hannah Taylor. Following a walk to Campbell, pinch runners Nadia Hotaling and Angelina Pierro entered the game for Taylor and Campbell, respectively, adding more speed on the bases.
The results were instantaneous when the next batter, Katie Mannis singled to left field, which allowed Hotaling and Pierro to score on the play. Later in the inning the Vikings strung together three straight RBI hits from Maryssa Sano, Erin Madsen and Jody Rogers to put Hudson Valley ahead 9-1.
In the circle for game one was Carly Gemmett. Gemmett has been pitching lights-out over the last week and she continued her dominance over the Lakers as she tossed a complete game and gave up one run on five hits and struck out 16 batters for the win.
GAME TWO: Hudson Valley 11, Finger Lakes 2 (5 innings)
The offense in game two was led by Jody Rogers, Abby Taylor and Erin Madsen, who combined to hit 7-for-9 at the plate and scored five runs with six RBIs in the game. Rogers went 3-for-3 with two triples, two runs scored and two RBIs.
The Hudson Valley attack was spread evenly throughout the game as they scored three runs in the first, second and fourth inning (two runs in the third) to put the Lakers away in five innings.
Katie Mannis earned the win after tossing 4.0 innings and gave up two runs on four hits and one strikeout. Gemmett entered the game in relief to close out the final inning.
