Gemmett's No-Hitter Paces Softball Sweep

The Hudson Valley Community College softball team completed the two-game sweep of SUNY Adirondack behind a no-hit pitching performance by Carly Gemmett in game one on Tuesday afternoon at the Vikings Softball Field on the campus of HVCC.
GAME ONE: Hudson Valley 8, Adirondack 0 (5 innings)
Carly Gemmett pitched her second straight no-hitter as the Vikings took the first game of the series. Gemmett tossed five innings and allowed zero hits, zero walks and zero runs, while striking out eight batters. Carly tossed a no-hitter in her last start in the Vikings 9-1 win over Onondaga on Sunday.
Maryssa Sano opened up the scoring in the first inning of the game when she singled to right field to score Erin Madsen. Madsen has emerged as the Vikings leadoff hitter and kicked the game off with a line drive single to right field and advanced to third base on an error.
The Vikings big inning came in the second when they put up three runs. Marissa Dodge and Abby Campbell each tallied RBIs to extend their lead over the Timberwolves. Five Vikings recorded extra base hits with Kaylee LaForest, Alexis Baker, Angelina Pierro and Campbell smacking doubles. Pierro also utilized her speed to sprint out a triple in the second inning. Pierro finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate and scored two runs and drove in one RBI.
Skylar Burns had a big day at the plate as well. Burns went 2-for-2 at the plate and scored one run and drove in an RBI in the big third inning.
As a team, Hudson Valley finished with 11 hits and the defense did not commit a single error to help preserve the perfect game for Gemmett.
GAME TWO: Hudson Valley 9, Adirondack 2 (Final)
The Vikings rallied late to score six runs in the top of the fifth inning to pull away from the Timberwolves and secured the series sweep. As a team, the Vikings collected 10 hits, including a home run by Abby Campbell in the first inning. Campbell was one of three Vikings to finish the game with two hits in the game. Campbell also doubled to lead off the top of the sixth inning.
Erin Madsen and Sano also recorded two hits in the game. Madsen finished 2-for 5 at the plate and scored one run, while Sano went 2-for-3 with one run and two RBIs. Abby Taylor reached base twice and scored two runs, including a double to lead off the top of the fourth inning.
Katie Mannis earned the win as the Vikings starting pitcher as she tossed a complete game, giving up two runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts and three walks. She faced 30 batters on 103 pitches (65 strikes).
ON DECK:
The softball program hits the road on Thursday, April 20 when they travel to take on rival Herkimer for an important Region 3 match up. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
