Softball Sweeps Broome in Home Opener

The Hudson Valley Community College softball program dominated in all aspects of the game as they completed a sweep over SUNY Broome in its 2023 home opener on Tuesday afternoon at the Vikings Softball Field on the campus of HVCC.

GAME ONE: Hudson Valley 10, Broome 2 (5 Innings)

In the opening game, Carly Gemmett tossed a gem as she threw a complete game and allowed two runs on five hits, while striking out six batters.

Offensively, Hudson Valley put multiple runs on the board in the second, third and fourth innings as they were led by Kaylee LaForest, who collected a team-high three hits and scored three runs in the game. Hannah Taylor recorded a multi-hit game as she went 2-for-3 and scored a run.

The Vikings big offensive inning came in the third when they put four runs on the board. LaForest, Katie Mannis and Erin Madsen all drove in runs in the inning. Maryssa Sano started the rally as she reached base on a ground ball error. LaForest followed it up with a single to right field, which allowed Sano to score from second base. The next batter, Mannis singled to left field to drive in LaForest. The big hit in the inning came from Erin Madsen, who connected on for a two-run home run over the right-centerfield fence and put the Vikings up 7-0.

GAME TWO: Hudson Valley 16, Broome 2 (5 Innings)

In the final game, the Vikings earned a big win, scoring 16 runs, which was highlighted by a huge eight-run fifth inning.

LaForest continued her big day, hitting 3-of-4 at the plate with two RBIs and scored twice. Jody Rogers also finished with multiple hits, going 2-of-3 with one RBI and one run scored.

Mannis (1-3) earned her first win of the season as she tossed a complete game one-hitter and allowed two runs and three strikeouts, while walking seven batters. Mannis also helped herself as she went 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs and three runs scored.

ON DECK:

The softball program returns to action this Thursday, April 6 as they welcome Mohawk Valley to Troy, NY for a critical Region 3 doubleheader. The first game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. at the Vikings Softball Field on the campus of HVCC.
