The Hudson Valley Community College softball program snapped its 22-game losing streak to NJCAA Region 3 rival, Herkimer, as they defeated the Generals 2-1 on Friday afternoon at the Onondaga Spring Classic in Syracuse, NY.
GAME ONE: Lackawanna 12, Hudson Valley 4 (5 Innings)
The Vikings dropped its opening game 12-4 to a tough, NJCAA division II program, Lackawanna. The Falcons jumped out to a hefty 11-0 lead after the top of the first inning. The Vikings settled down and went on to outscore Lackawanna 4-1 over the remaining four innings of the game.
Hudson Valley tallied nine hits and were led by Abigayle Campbell, Kaylee LaForest and Abby Taylor, who all recorded multiple hits. Campbell connected for two doubles and Erin Madsen and Gia Bucciero also collected a double in the game.
GAME TWO: Hudson Valley 2, Herkimer 1 (Final)
In the final game of the day, the Vikings accomplished a feat that hasn't happened since 2010. Hudson Valley snapped a 22-game losing streak to their rivals, Herkimer, which dated back to April 10, 2010, when the Vikings defeated the Generals 8-6 at HVCC.
The turning point of the game happened in the fourth inning when Hudson Valley produced back-to-back two-out RBI hits by Abby Taylor and Gia Bucciero. Following a leadoff out by Maryssa Sano, Katie Mannis walked and Kaylee LaForest then struck out to bring freshman Abby Taylor to the plate.
Taylor connected for a triple to right field, which allowed Mannis to score the go-ahead run. Two pitches later, Bucciero drove a single to centerfield to score Taylor for the team's second run of the game, which proved to be enough to secure the historic win.
On the mound, Carly Gemmett tossed a gem as she finished with a complete game win. She allowed one run on four hits, five walks and struck out two batters on 96 pitches.
