Softball Wins on Abby Taylor's Late Game Home Run

The Hudson Valley Community College softball program earned its second win of the season after defeating Sussex 3-1 on Thursday afternoon in Myrtle Beach, SC, their final date of competition at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic.

GAME ONE: Hudson Valley 3, Sussex 1 (Final)

Hudson Valley and Sussex were is a defensive battle for the majority of the game with Sussex pulling ahead 1-0 in the top of the third inning, which forced the Vikings to regroup and work towards a comeback victory.

The Vikings did tie the game in the bottom of the fifth inning when Gianna Bucciero singled to right field and allowed Erin Madsen to score the run. Madsen led the inning off with a single to right field and later advanced to scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Angelina Pierro.

In the sixth inning, the Vikings utilized a two-out rally when Abby Taylor connected for her second home run in as many days. Taylor launched a home run over the center field fence and drove in Kaylee LaForest in the process and the Vikings now led 3-1 with one inning remaining.

On the mound, Carly Gemmett tossed one of her best games of the young season and earned the complete game win and struck out 11 batters and allowed just one run on six hits.

GAME TWO: County College of Morris 5, Hudson Valley 0 (Final)

The final game of the day the Vikings offense was limited to just three hits and they committed three defensive errors, which helped keep Morris on the offensive attack, which proved to be a difference maker in the game.

Katie Mannis pitched well, but took the loss as the Vikings starting pitcher. She went 5.1 innings and allowed five runs on nine hits and struck out three batters. Offensively, Gianna Bucciero, Jody Rogers and Hannah Taylor each collected one hit for the Vikings.

ON DECK:

The softball team is scheduled to play home on Tuesday, March 21, pending the weather and field conditions as a result of the latest snowstorm. If the game is postponed, the Vikings will then travel to Syracuse, NY to participate in the Onondaga Spring Invitational on March 24-25 and they will play a round robin tournament against Onondaga, Herkimer and Lackawanna.
