Hudson Valley Community College softball program split the opening day of the NJCAA Region 3 Sub-Regional, abest-of-three series, with Mohawk Valley on Saturday afternoon at Vikings Softball Field on the campus of Hudson Valley Community College.

The game two loss, snapped the program's 17-game wins streak, as Mohawk Valley forced a game three for Sunday, May 15 at 12 p.m. at Hudson Valley. The winner of game three will travel to face No. 2 Herkimer on Thursday, May 19-20 for a best-of-three series in the Region 3 Championship.

Game One: Hudson Valley 4, Mohawk Valley 2

The Vikings need a late game rally to put the Hawks away in the first game of the NJCAA Region 3 Sub-Regional series. The game was tied at 1-1 with the Vikings at the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning when Gianna Bucciero singled on the first pitch of the at bat, driving in two runs. Following back-to-back singles by Shealynn Peckowitz and Abigayle Campbell, Bucciero sent a ground ball single up through centerfield, to allow Peckowitz to score. Campbell also scored when the Hawks fielder committed an error.

Peckowitz earned the win for the Vikings as she tossed a complete game, allowing four hits, two runs and struck out eight batters. Maryssa Sano, Katie Mannis, Hannah Taylor, Campbell, Bucciero and Peckowitz all finished with one hit to lead the Vikings offense in the opening game.

Game Two: Mohawk Valley 12, Hudson Valley 4 (6 innings)

The Vikings appeared to become complacent in the second game and the Hawks made the Vikings pay as they defeated the Vikings for the first time in 18 games, snapping the Vikings 17-game win streak to force a game three on Sunday.

Trailing 3-0 in the top of the fifth inning, the Vikings rallied to close out the deficit with one swing of a bat as Campbell connected on a 1-1 pitch deep over the left field fence, tying the game up at 3-3, with a three-run home run.

Mohawk Valley responded in the bottom half of the inning with a big seven run inning, and eventually put the game away for good with a 8-run mercy rule in the sixth inning.

The Vikings connected on two home runs on the day, joining Campbell was Maryssa Sano, who hit her long ball in the top of the sixth inning, but it wasn't enough to jump-start another late game rally.

Up Next: Game Three on Sunday

The Vikings are set to complete the three-game series with Mohawk Valley tomorrow, Sunday, May 15 at 12 p.m. at the Vikings Softball Field on the campus of Hudson Valley Community College. The winner will earn a spot in the Region 3 Championship series against No. 2 Herkimer.
