Softball Rolls; Sweeps Jefferson for Sixth Straight Win

The Hudson Valley Community College softball program completed the series sweep today in a road matchup with Jefferson Community College and have now won six straight games as they continue to make the push towards the NJCAA Region 3 postseason. 

GAME ONE: Hudson Valley 8, Jefferson 4  

Hudson Valley jumped out to an early advantage over the Cannoneers, but had to overcome a fast start by Jefferson in the opening inning. The Cannoneers posted two runs in the bottom of the first, but the Vikings eliminated the deficit and never looked back. 

In the second inning, trailing 2-0, the Vikings scored three runs in the inning with Katie Mannis connecting on a 3-2 pitch to score Maryssa Sano (reached on error) and Gabrielle Castiglione (singled to right). Hannah Taylor followed it up with a single of her own to score to score Mannis. 

The Vikings scored another three runs in the fourth inning with Jody Rogers and Gianna Bucciero driving in the three runs. Mannis started the fourth inning rally with a leadoff double and was sent home on a single to center by Rogers. on Sunday afternoon.  Rogers scored later in the inning on a passed ball and Bucciero connects for a Fielder's Choice to score Taylor. 

Miranda Peck was awarded the win after she tossed six and a third innings in relief, allowing two runs on six hits and struck out a season-best 11 batters.

GAME TWO: Hudson Valley 9, Jefferson 1 (5 innings)

The Vikings didn't waste any time in the second game as they scored three runs in the home half of the inning and continued its offensive power on their way to six straight wins. 

Hannah Taylor jumpstarted the Vikings with a leadoff single to centerfield and later scored on a single by Abigayle Campbell. Later in the inning, Mannis and Rogers earned back-to-back bases-loaded walks to allow Gianna Bucciero and Maryssa Sano to score. Taylor also connected for a home run in the second inning and the Vikings increased their lead to 4-0. 

The Vikings later notched three more runs in the fifth inning, which was highlighted by hits by Shealynn Peckowitz and Taylor. 

Carly Gemmett earned the win inside the circle after she allowed four hits and one run over five innings and struck out six batters along the way.

The Vikings tallied 12 hits in game two with Campbell leading the way, going 3-for-3 at the plate. Mannis, Taylor and Sano also collected multiple hits in the win.
