The Hudson Valley Community College softball team played a competitive softball game at home for the first time since the 2018 season as they welcomed national-ranked Herkimer to the Vikings Softball Field on Thursday afternoon. The Vikings dropped both games to the No. 3 Generals in the hard-fought doubleheader, dropping game one 16-3 and game two 14-6.

Game 1
Herkimer 16, Hudson Valley 3

The Vikings fell behind early to a tough Herkimer program, giving up three runs in the first two innings and then the Generals put the game away with an eight-run fourth inning, followed by a five-run fifth inning.

Hudson Valley scored three runs in the fourth inning with the offensive firepower by Katie Mannis and Jody Rogers, who both knocked in runs in the inning.

The pitching duties for the Vikings was split among Shealynn Peckowitz and Miranda Peck, who combined to strike out eight over five innings. Maryssa Sano led the Vikings with two hits in her three at-bats.

Game 2
Herkimer 14, Hudson Valley 6

The Herkimer Generals utilized another big seven-run inning in the third inning to pull away from the Vikings, who were leading the Generals 4-2 prior to the big third inning. Hudson Valley continued to fight back, scoring one run in each the fourth and fifth innings, but another big Herkimer inning put the game out of reach.

The Vikings big inning came in the fourth, when they scored four runs and were led by Rogers, Gabriella Castiglione and Abigayle Campbell, who each recorded an RBI in the inning.

Miranda Peck took the start and had a great performance in the circle for Hudson Valley. She kept the high-octane Herkimer offense off balance for the majority of her 3.1 innings pitched. Peckowtiz entered in relief and tossed the final 1.2 innings of the game.

As a team, Hudson Valley tallied eight hits with Mannis and Alyssa Smith collecting multi-hit games, finishing with two hits each.
