Hudson Valley Community College softball (0-2) was finally able to see game action as the weather and poor field conditions had continuously postponed all of their games until this afternoon's doubleheader at Broome.
Game One: Broome 13, Hudson Valley 3 (5 Innings)
The Vikings got off to a rough start in the first game of the series as Broome defeated the Vikings 13-3 in four innings. Broome jumped on the Vikings pitching early and scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Broome's big inning came in the third inning, when they scored seven runs and ultimately put the game away with the mercy rule.
Hudson Valley scored their lone run in the third inning. Following a walk to Andrea Boon (Saranac Lake/Saranac Lake), Matti Hayes (Castleton/Columbia) connected on a pitch for the RBI single.
In the circle for the Vikings, Elizabeth Brooking (Rensselaer/Rensselaer) earned the start and pitched 2.2 innings and allowed 13 runs on 11 hits in her first outing of the 2018 season. Hayes relieved Brooking and closed out the final 1.1 innings, allowing only two hits with one strikeout.
Game Two: Broome 5, Hudson Valley 3
The Vikings settled down in the second game as they collected eight hits and scored three runs, but were unable to comeback from Broome's five-run fifth inning.
Hayes and Paige Roberts (Cobleskill/Cobleskill) led the Vikings at the plate as they combined for four hits in eight at-bats. Brooking connected on a pitch for a double in the gap. Madison Herrington (Mechanicville/Mechanicville) also doubled and later scored for one of the Vikings three runs in the game.
In the circle, Gina Patricelli (Troy/Lansingburgh) took the start, pitching 4.0 innings and allowed four runs on five hits in her first collegiate start. Hayes relieved the final 2.2 innings with great success, only giving up one hit and a walk to close out the game.
On Deck:
The Vikings home game on Sunday, April 15 against Finger Lakes has been postponed due to the threat of rain and sleet in the forecast. They are back home on Tuesday, April 17 to play a doubleheader with Herkimer beginning at 3 p.m.
