Track and Field Adds Points on Day Two of Nationals

The Hudson Valley Community College men's and women's track and field programs continued to compete on day two of the 2023 NJCAA Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field National Championships at Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica, NY.

After day two, the men's program sits fifth overall after they received 14 points on day two and have a combined team score of 30 points. Jonathan Hanna and Brooks Robson combined to score seven points in the men's long jump event as Hanna placed fourth overall with a jump of 6.63m and Robson finished seventh overall with a jump of 6.29m. Jalen Graham scored more points for the Vikings again as he placed fifth in the men's discus throw after he tossed an official distance of 39.37m.

In the decathlon, Dylan Lawless and Daniel Honsinger finished seventh and eighth, respectively, and combined to add three more points to the men's team score. Lawless finished with a total score of 4,160 and Honsinger tallied 4,067 points.

Demetrius Williams secured two final heat positions as he qualified in the men's 110m hurdles and the men's 400m hurdles events. Williams finished fifth overall in the men's 110m hurdles with a time of 16.31 and placed seventh overall in the men's 400m hurdles with a time of 59.07.

Charles Benichoux also qualified for the final heats in the men's 100m dash and the men's 200m dash events. Benichoux won the men's 100m dash event last year and he is in contention after placing second in the first round with a time of 10.68. Benichoux placed seventh overall in the first round of the men's 200m dash with a time of 22.37.

The women's team is 15th overall as they have accumulated nine points in the heptathlon during day two of the national championships and jumped to 14th overall with 12 total team points as they head into the final day on Saturday. In the heptathlon, Alyssa Bruno added five team points as she placed fourth overall with a total score of 2,432 and Ellicia Swedish added four team points with a fifth place finish with a score of 1,632.

Ocean Meda participated in the women's 400m event and failed to qualify for the final heat on Saturday after she placed 14th overall with a time of 1:13.46. However, Meda did qualify for the final heat in the women's 100m dash after placing eighth with a time of 13.01. Nisa Osman-Mergani just missed the cut for the 100m finals as she placed ninth overall with a time of 13.23. Osman-Mergani and Meda also missed out on the women's 200m dash final as they finished outside of the top-8 for the event.
