Track & Field Lands Three All-Americans
The Hudson Valley track and field program had three student-athletes take home All-American honors at the NJCAA National Championships on Saturday, May 12. In order to receive the title of All-American, an athlete had to of finished in the top 2 in their respective events. Elijah Washington (Ballston Spa/Ballston Spa), Devin Kipp (Hudson/Hudson), and Alayna Fredenburg (Rotterdam/Schalmont) did just that and earned All-American honors.
Fredenburg, volleyball player turned javelin thrower finished in second place in a very exciting Saturday Javelin Finals. The weather was less than ideal as the temperatures hovered in the mid 40's with constant rain and wind. Alayna's best throw in the preliminary round was 29.05m, good enough for sixth place. The Javelin leader from Bergen threw 33.86m. On Alayna's fifth throw in finals she put everything together tossing the javelin 33.99m for first place by 13cm (5inches). The following 12 throws were close, but on the last throw of competition, Bergen's Elizabeth Vargas launched a throw of 34.54m to overtake Fredenburg. Alayna's throw of 33.99m was a personal best of over three meters.
Kipp finished in second place for the Men's Shot Put. Kipp, who missed out on All-Region honors at last week's Regional Championship, was not going to suffer the same fate this week. His second throw in a very slick circle would stand good enough for second place. Kipp beat out fellow teammate Elijah Washington by 3cm to earn All-American status.
Washington finished in second place at Thursday's Hammer Throw competition. Washington was third going into the finals, he bettered his prelim mark on his fourth and fifth throw. Washington's best mark of 44.79m couldn't overtake RC-Glochester's Adam Hunt. Washington went on to defeat Hun in the Shot Put on Saturday as Washington beat him by 1m.
