The Hudson Valley Community College men's soccer team was edged 4-3 by Jefferson in its 2024 season-opener on Wednesday afternoon in Watertown, NY.
The two programs competed with a scoreless start for the first 23 minutes of the match before the Vikings broke open the first-half scoring. Hudson Valley jumped out to a 2-0 advantage before the home Cannoneers responded with three unanswered goals for a 3-2 halftime lead.
Hudson Valley's first goal came from Vincent Scavullo (Ballston Spa / Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) on an assist from Harry Rubinstein (Saratoga Springs / Stillwater) At the 22:30 mark, Hudson Valley utilized a quick throw-in following a Jefferson turnover. The quick action caught the Cannoneers unbalanced, and Rubinstein sent a nice pass between defenders to Scavullo, setting up the fastbreak goal.
Nearly three minutes later, the Vikings scored again on a 30-plus yard free kick opportunity. Dillon Halvax (Nassau / Maple Hill) sent the free kick to the middle of the box, where Caleb Motta (Medusa / Greenville) was waiting and deflected the pass with a header into the back of the net. The Vikings took a two-goal lead with 19:25 remaining until halftime.
Coming out of the halftime break and trailing 3-2, Hudson Valley tied the game at 3-3 at the 35:37 mark. On a corner kick from the left side of the field, Halvax sent a long pass to the opposite side of the net where Scavullo tracked down and gathered the ball. He immediately floated a pass to the keeper's box where Eli Charlebois (Castleton / Maple Hill) was well-positioned to send a header into the top left corner of the net for the score.
Unfortunately, the Vikings were unable to score again as the home team pushed the game-winning goal to the back of the net with 5:34 remaining in the game.
The men's soccer program returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 1 as they host Onondaga at 3:15 p.m. at the Outdoor Athletic Complex on the campus of HVCC. The game will be streamed live at www.hvccathletics.com/WATCH.
