The Hudson Valley Community College men's soccer team's (8-5) lost a tough 3-2 match to SUNY Broome on Wednesday afternoon at Hudson Valley's Outdoor Athletic Complex.

The Vikings started the scoring in the first when Asan Anarkulov (Scottsdale, Ariz./Coronado) sent a forwarding pass 30-yards up field with Collin Skiff (Greenwich/Greenwich) gaining control after Broome's defender and goalkeeper collided 20-yards away from the net. Skiff composed himself and sent the ball into a wide open net for the 1-0 Vikings lead.

Broome's Ismar Turkovic responded with a goal of his own at the 28:41 mark in the first to tie the match at 1-1. With less than 10 minutes remaining in the opening half, Ethan Thomas (Ballston Spa/Ballston Spa) had one of the top plays of the night as he dribbled across the width of the field to find a slight opening in the defense. Thomas quickly gave the ball up to Garrett Axtmann (Castleton/Maple Hill) to draw the defenders. As he repositioned himself to receive the ball back, Thomas sent a strike from 20-yards out to the top right corner of the net. The Vikings went into halftime with a 2-1 advantage.

It didn't take Broome long to tie the match as Damien Rutan scored less than two minutes into the second half. At the 9:16 mark, Rutan scored again on a well-placed corner kick from the right side that curved into the net, just out of the reach of the Vikings keeper, Benjamin Peay (Westerlo/Berne-Knox-Westerlo). Peay recorded seven saves in 90 minutes of play.

Despite the late game attack by the Vikings, Broome's defense kept Hudson Valley off the board in the second half and secured the win as they blocked a pair of free kicks that were awarded to the Vikings late in the game.

Men's soccer travels to play Onondaga this Saturday, Oct. 14 for a scheduled 3 p.m. start.
