Hudson Valley men's lacrosse couldn't overcome a strong offensive showing from Tompkins Cortland, falling 10-4 in a home contest on Wednesday.
Freshman Romeyn Murray led the Vikings' offensive efforts with two goals and one assist, firing off four shots with three on target. Austin Fitzpatrick and Cole Vumbaco each added a goal, with Fitzpatrick also grabbing two ground balls and Vumbaco tallying a game-high seven shots. Possession was an uphill battle for the Vikings, with Tompkins Cortland forcing 24 turnovers, including six by Fitzpatrick. The Vikings did manage 22 ground balls, led by Anthony Palladino's seven, but the turnover differential proved too much to overcome.
Between the pipes, Nicholas Lagitch made 17 saves on 27 shots but ultimately took the loss, dropping to 0-4 on the season.
Faceoffs were a bright spot, particularly for Fitzpatrick, who won 8 of 12, helping the Vikings gain some momentum in the middle periods. Still, offensive execution in the final third proved elusive. Penalties were another issue for Hudson Valley, with five different players spending time in the box, totaling six minutes in penalties—momentum-killing moments that Tompkins Cortland capitalized on.
The Vikings will look to regroup and bounce back in their next matchup as they head to Mohawk Valley on Friday for a 5:30 game.
