Conference Coach of the Year: 2022-23

Dr. Dennis McCormick enters his second season as head coach of the Vikings men’s and women’s golf programs.

In his first season in 2022-23, Coach McCormick guided the men’s golf program to its first Mountain Valley Conference Championship since 1985, snapping the program’s 33-year championship drought. Under Coach McCormick, the team’s top performer, Lane Jenkins, won the individual championship after winning the MVC Championship event, hosted by Herkimer. Jenkins also placed runner-up at the Region 3 championships and qualified for the NJCAA National Tournament, which he earned All-American status with a top-15 finish.

Dr. McCormick brings over 25 years of coaching experience to Hudson Valley. He has coached teams from sixth grade to high school varsity, for both boys and girls, with a primary emphasis on golf and basketball.

Golf has been a lifelong passion for Dr. McCormick and he has been involved in the game for the past 37 years. He is currently a certified golf instructor through the First Tee Organization and his background in personal training, coaching, teaching and psychology adds to his confident and competent golf resumé.

He is currently in his 23rd year as an elementary physical education teacher in the Voorheesville school district. He is also an adjunct professor at Russell Sage College and Emporia State University in that school’s online master’s degree program in Health, Physical Education and Recreation. Dr. McCormick also is an online course designer and Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Upper Iowa University’s Sport Management, Coaching and Leadership master’s degree program, and designed the Coaching Lacrosse and Coaching Golf courses.

Coach McCormick was part of the tremendous girls’ basketball program at Voorheesville, which won the NYSPHSAA state championship at Hudson Valley’s McDonough Sports Complex in 2002.

He credits his professional achievements and motivations from the great professors he met at Hudson Valley as a student in 1996. Specifically, he calls long-time professor Tom Rogan, “the most influential person I have known.”

McCormick obtained his master’s degree in Physical Education, Health and Recreation from Emporia State University. He also earned his doctorate in Sport and Performance Psychology at the University of the Rockies. He completed his undergraduate degree from SUNY Cortland. Dr. McCormick resides in the Knox/Altamont area with his wife, and they share three children together.
