The Hudson Valley Community College men's golf program earned a spot in the 2024 NJCAA Golf National Championships after they completed a historic comeback to claim second place at the NJCAA Region 3 Championships on Tuesday afternoon at Glen Oak Golf Course in East Amherst, NY.
Following a tough day, shooting a 354, the Vikings trailed Jefferson by 17-strokes for second place and an automatic bid to the NJCAA national tournament. The Vikings did more than erase the double-digit deficit, they shot a 317 as a team and outpaced Jefferson by 27-strokes to claim runner-up and the national berth.
Leading the way for the Vikings was Jonathan Reynolds, who posted a 76, which was second-best second-round score among the Region 3 field. Reynolds finished the two-day tournament with an overall score of 159, which placed him fifth overall. Joshua Carr also improved upon his day one score of an 84 by six strokes and finished the day with a 78 and an overall tournament score of 162 for eighth place in the overall individual ranks. Reynolds and Carr were recognized with All-Region honors following their top-10 finish in the individual standings.
Cameron France and Owen Hampson played a huge role in the team's ability to overtake Jefferson for second-place as France improved upon his day one score by eight strokes and finished the round with an 83. Hampson's turnaround was phenomenal as he finished day two with an 80, 16-strokes better than day one. France's final tournament tally was a 174 and Hampson posted a 36-hole score of 176. Matthew Valoze rounds out the Vikings team with a 98 second round score and finished the tournament with a 197.
Up next for the men's golf team is a trip to the NJCAA Golf National Championships hosted by Jamestown Community College at the Chautauqua Golf Course in Chautauqua, NY. The four-day tournament is set to begin on June 4th and run through June 7th.
