The Hudson Valley Community College men's and women's basketball programs have clinched a berth in the 2023 NJCAA Region 3 basketball tournament, as announced by the Region 3 Basketball Committee on Thursday.
For the third consecutive season, the men's basketball program earned a No. 4 seed and will host their quarterfinal game on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at 5 p.m. They are set to take on the 2019 NJCAA National Champions, Herkimer College, who the Vikings have defeated twice this season by an average margin of 9.5 points per game, but any matchup with the Generals will be a tough battle regardless of rankings and previous season results.
The Vikings were led this season by Region 3 player of the year candidate, Trevor Green, who finished the regular season averaging 21.4 points per game, which ranks third among all Region 3. Green leads the Vikings in every statistical category this season as he also averages a team-best 8.9 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 2.1 steals and 1.4 blocks per game.
Jourdan Belcher will play a key role in the Vikings success next week as well. In the two games against the Generals this season, Belcher has averaged 21.5 points per game, which included a hug 34 points and 11 rebounds performance in January when both programs were ranked inside the weekly NJCAA top-10 rankings.
The doors open to the McDonough Sports Complex at 4 p.m. with free admission to all spectators. The HVCC Student Activities Office has sponsored the event and will provide free pizza, drinks and snacks for all students in attendance.
