Sophomore guard Maurice Lane (Bakersfield, CA/West High School) poured in 24 points to lead the Hudson Valley Community College men's basketball team to a 68-65 win over SUNY Cobleskill tonight in Troy.
Hudson Valley, which has won three of its last four games between the two schools, improves its record to 14-6 and 9-6 in Region III play. Cobleskill, which entered the game ranked No. 6 in the latest NJCAA Division III poll, fell to 15-4 and 11-4 in regional games.
Lane scored 20 of his points in the first half as Hudson Valley raced out to a 43-27 lead at the break.
The Vikings, who entered the game as the top three-point shooting team in NJCAA Division III with 9.5 triples per game, were unable to hit a three-point bucket in the second half and Cobleskill was able to climb back into the game.
Sophomore Zach Bye (Scotia/Scotia-Glenville High School) added 11 points and 13 rebounds for Hudson Valley. Sophomore Kevin Goutos (Altamont/Guilderland High School) and freshman Justin Gallo (Brunswick/Lansingburgh High School) chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Jason Taylor (Deer Park) paced Cobleskill with 12 points. Stanley Francois (Brooklyn) had 12 points and 13 rebounds. Harley Fuller (Gloversville) chipped in eight points and six assists.
Although Hudson Valley connected on just four three-point buckets, the Vikings managed to make 20-of-24 free throw attempts. Conversely, Cobleskill made just 16-of-31 from the line.
