The Hudson Valley Community College (14-9) men's basketball team had its chance of an upset over nationally-ranked Morrisville State College (19-1) roll off the rim at the buzzer in a 71-68 loss to the Mustangs earlier tonight in Troy.
Hudson Valley got a career-high 23 points and seven rebounds from sophomore point guard Dane Samuels (New City/Clarkstown North High School). Sophomore forward Khylan Hunt (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs High School) finished with 21 points and 17 rebounds. In the process, Hunt moved into eighth place on the college's all-time scoring list with 841 points. He passed former Hudson Valley great Norm Gates, who had 830 points from 1954 to 1956.
Morrisville, which trailed by as many as seven points, 47-40, in the second half, got 17 points from Jamal Davis (Riverhead).
Each team struggled from the free throw line in the game but the Vikings missed their last nine free throw attempts and finished the game 12-for-28 from the charity stripe. Morrisville was 12-for-27 from the free throw line.
Sophomore Allan Dickson (Troy/Troy High School) had a chance to tie the game at the buzzer but his three-point attempt from the right corner rattled in and out. Dickson finished the game with 14 points.
Morrisville entered the game ranked No. 8 in the latest NJCAA Division III poll.
