The Hudson Valley Community College (0-1) men's basketball team suffered an 81-76 overtime loss at defending Region III champion Cayuga Community College (1-0) in the season opener for both teams on Monday night.
Cayuga, which entered the game ranked No. 6 in the preseason NJCAA Division III poll, led by 8-10 points throughout most of the second half until Hudson Valley came back to take the lead, 64-62, on a three-point play by freshman Ryan Livingston (Bethlehem/LaSalle Institute) with 27 seconds remaining in regulation.
A jumper by Cayuga's DaShawn Coleman with 11 seconds left sent the game into overtime, and the Spartans were able to maintain a 4-5 point lead throughout the overtime period to pick up the win.
Sophomore guard Aric Kucel (Gloversville/Gloversville High School) led Hudson Valley with 21 points. Livingston added 17 points, and freshman forward Khylan Hunt (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs High School) contributed 15 points.
Coleman led all players with 26 points.
