First-Year Guard Jeremy Schneible Leads Hudson Valley
With 16 Points As Vikings Down Cobleskill, 78-57
Cobleskill, January 30 - In a men's basketball matchup featuring a pair of junior college heavyweights, Hudson Valley Community College delivered a knockout punch this evening. The Vikings went on the road to post a convincing 78-57 victory against Mountain Valley Conference rival SUNY Cobleskill.
Hudson Valley (13-5) is ranked second among National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III Region III teams. Cobleskill (18-5) was the top-ranked squad before tonight's loss.
Cobleskill seized an early 4-0 lead, but Hudson Valley responded with a Jeremy Schneible (Greenwich) and Thomas Perren (Brotmanville, NJ) combination, outscoring Cobleskill 19-6 over the next eight minutes. Perren, a second-year center, had eight points and two assists during the run. Schneible, a freshman guard who led all scorers with 16 points, contributed four points and a pair of steals during the eight-minute stretch.
Hudson Valley went on to capture a 34-22 first-half lead and never trailed again.
Cobleskill made a run at Hudson Valley midway through second half, outscoring the Vikings 8-0 to pull within six points, but second-year forward R.J. Mann (Canajoharie) and first-year guard Paul Bowe (Hudson Falls) teamed up to fend off the charge.
Bowe put an end to the Cobleskill scoring streak by drilling a 3-pointer off a pass from Mann. Then, after a strong defensive effort prevented Cobleskill from scoring on the ensuing possession, Mann took a pass from Bowe and nailed a 3-pointer. Mann then stole the ball at midcourt and took it to basket for a layup, giving Hudson Valley a 52-38 lead.
From that point on, Cobleskill would not cut the Hudson Valley advantage to less than 10 points.
In addition to his 16 points, Schneible had three rebounds, three steals and two assists. Perren had 14 points and 12 rebounds. Mann contributed 13 points, four rebounds and three assists. Point guard Kyle Miller (Columbia) had eight points, four assists and three steals.
