Hudson Valley Community College's men's and women's basketball teams are ranked first on the weekly National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region III athletic report released today. The report includes statistics from more than 30 two-year colleges from across the Northeast.
The basketball teams are both at the top of the NJCAA Region III coach's poll. Under the direction of second-year head coach Colleen Ferris, Hudson Valley's women's team (12-0) is off to its best start since 1992-93 (when Paul Bishop's squad captured the first 18 games of the season) and the third-best start in school history.
Defensively, the women's team is ranked second among NJCAA Region III teams, holding opponents to 48.1 points per game. Offensively, the Lady Vikings are ranked third, scoring 69.6 points per game.
First-year guard/forward Lindsey Bradt (Bishop Maginn) has the best free throw percentage in Region III (86.6). She also is the fifth-leading scorer, averaging 18.4 points per contest. Second-year guard/forward Kara Sheehan (Catholic Central) has the second-best field goal percentage (56.1).
Hudson Valley's men's basketball team (9-1), allowing just 63.4 points per game, has the second-ranked defense among NJCAA Region III teams. In addition to the number one Region III ranking, the Vikings are ranked sixth in the nation among NJCAA Division III teams.
The Hudson Valley hockey team (8-4) is ranked second on the report.
