Miller's Three-Pointer At The Buzzer Gives Hudson Valley's Men A Thrilling 75-72 Victory Against Cayuga Community College
Cayuga, November 5 - Hudson Valley Community College's Thomas Perren (Arthur P. Schalick, NJ) thought he clinched today's Mountain Valley Conference basketball contest against Cayuga Community College at the end of regulation. When the referees informed him his game-ending dunk didn't count because time had expired, as his teammates danced around in celebration, the co-captain made sure Hudson Valley got the job done in overtime.
With just eight seconds left in the extra period, the score was tied at 72. Hudson Valley point guard Kyle Miller (Columbia) brought the ball up the floor as Perren, a six-foot-five forward/center, drifted underneath Cayuga's basket. Perren yelled, "Now, now," as Miller reached the outer-edge of the three-point circle.
"I thought he was going to throw me an alley-oop," Perren said.
There wasn't enough time for that. As the buzzer sounded, Miller launched a bomb that hit nothing but net, giving the Vikings a hard-fought 75-72 season-opening victory.
"I knew the clock running down," said Miller, a sophomore who ended up with 15 points, including six in overtime, nine rebounds and three steals. "I heard Tom yelling something and I just said, ‘I'm shooting it.'"
"I'm glad he shot it," Perren said. "What a win."
While Miller shined bright in the spotlight, Perren also came out fired up for the five-minute overtime session. The second-year player, a student senator, contributed two points, two offensive rebounds and two blocks in overtime. He had 13 points and six rebounds on the game.
"I thought I had that basket at the end of regulation," Perren said. "That gave me the extra energy to go out and get it done. We all wanted this game bad."
Sophomore forward R.J. Mann (Canajoharie) contributed 11 points and 12 rebounds. Freshmen Billy Etue (Heatly) and Jason McKinney (South Glens Falls) each made a solid debut for Hudson Valley. Etue had 12 points and four rebounds. McKinney had six points and seven rebounds.
"Our freshmen stepped up today," co-captain Adam Vooris (Columbia) said. "They played really well."
While Hudson Valley is 1-0, Cayuga dropped to 1-1 with the loss.
